A mid-15th century oak misericord, Southern Netherlands, circa 1445
REF: 5002
Having a thick, solid, reactangular backplate, with cut top corners to fit within the choir stall, the corbel with sloping serpentine-shaped ledge and rounded corners, atop a bold foliage-carved bracket
The lack of carved supporters either side of the corbel strongly suggests a European, rather than English, attribution. Similar examples are in the church of St. Peter, Leuven, Belgium and in the V&A collection, London, attributed to Brussels craftsman Claes de Bruyn, (c.1441-45), acc. no. W.30-1910
