Of quart Old English Ale Standard capacity, the lid and drum decorated with bold stylized tulips, having a rare twin love-bird thumbpiece, a three-part hinge and S-shaped handle with hoof terminal, owner's initials 'CB' stamped behind lid denticulations, dated touch inside base (OP2525 PS5067), capacity 42.3 fl.oz.
Provenance: Former Jan Gadd Collection, past president of The British Pewter Society.
A Charles II pewter flat-lid tankard, by Jonathan Ingles, also with wrigglework and twin love-bird thumbpiece, sold Christie's, South Kensington, London, 13 November 2002, Lot 243, (£15,275). It had previously sold Sotheby's, London, 'Collection of A. V. Sutherland-Graeme', 3 June 1965, Lot 94 and exhibited at the 'Exhibition of Pewter in the Usher Gallery, Lincoln', 29 September to 27 October 1962 (No. 190).
