The single-piece pedimented board designed with the arms and crest of the family of Banks (alternate spelling Banke or Bankes)
Blazoned as:
Arms - Sable a cross or between four fleurs-de-lis argent
Crest - Upon a mount vert a dragon rampant argent holding between its foreclaws a cross paty or
Either side of the crest are two initials: 'G' or 'C' to the left and 'B' to the right
The Banks family resided at Quixley (now spelt Whixley), near Knaresborough, Yorkshire. The family descended from the Banks of Newton-in-Craven, Yorkshire. A Richard Banks (b.1524) of Quixley/Whixley was elected as a Member of Parliament for Knaresborough in 1572 and held several offices within the Duchy of Lancaster. A branch of the family also resided at Winstanley Hall, Winstanley, near Wigan, Lancashire, from 1596
