A Henry VIII carved oak portrait panel, circa 1520

REF: 5080

Sold

Carved with the bust of a male, facing to dexter, wearing a brimmed 'bejewelled' hat, his hair unusually formed from a bizarre arrangement of C-scrolls, gauge-work and beading, the projecting jaw-length beard more naturalistically formed, with exaggerated long narrow neck, dimensions overall: height 31.6cm, width 29.5cm

The panel appears to be an attempt of a realistic portrait depiction, far rarer than the common 'Romayne' type carved portrait panels of the period

  • Height 22.8 cm / 9 "
  • Width 20.5 cm / 8 "
