Carved to each face, centred with a putto, standing atop a green man mask, their outstretched arms supporting bold acanthus S-scrolls, enclosing flowerheads and embellished with acorns
This carving appears to be a forerunner to staircase designs of the mid-17th century, in the manner of Edward Pearce (c.1630-98). Although the acanthus found here is reminiscent of Baroque designs the putto (particularly the facial features) and green man mask conform to 16th century designs
