A good, documented and small mid-16th century oak boarded chest, English, circa 1550
REF: 4568
With unusual features, the hinged lid with applied moulded edge, original and large scroll-profiled spandrels below the plain front board, the sides descending to ogee-arched cut-away supports, with unusual carved arms of a 'cross' to each apex, highly reminiscent of a full cross found on similar period boarded stools, to the rear of the beautifully 'adze-worked' back board an original applied ledge with two small cut-outs to house the hinge lug and thereby support the lid when open
