A Charles II oak and turkeywork upholstered chair, circa 1680

REF: 4491

Upholstered in rare 17th century knotted wool turkeywork, on block and spiral-turned legs, joined by a crown-carved forerail and conforming turned side and low H-form stretchers

The turkeywork, and elements of the chair are similar to a chair at Temple Newsam, Leeds. It is entirely possible both chairs were originally part of a set. Another chair, again with comparable turkeywork, is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, acc. no.52.77.50, attributed to Boston, Massachusetts, due to the use of maple, the turkeywork upholstery was probably imported

The turkeywork on this example was cleaned/restored under the guidance of the Late Victor Chinnery, the esteemed author of 'Oak Furniture: The British Tradition', first edition 1979
