The Virgin's serene, yet arresting, oval-shaped face with distinctive facial features including penetrating, almond-shaped eyes, thin top lip and long, slender nose evoke numerous works by Tilman and his workshop. The mother's arms wrap around the Christ Child resting on her left hip, her right hand tenderly grasping the infant's foot. With wonderful curled locks of hair, again reminiscent of Tilman's work, the Holy Infant holds a globe. Carved in the round, the Virgin's long, flowing hair falls in a swathe of pleasing, almost stylised waves to the rear of this fine and noteworthy sculpture.
